Why do I need a TikTok caption?

Yes, TikTok is mostly about video and what’s inside that. But your TikTok caption is like that cherry on top. You can use it to summarize your video, ask your audience a question, or add a nice/funny/sarcastic/[insert other quality] touch to it.

Plus, what goes into your caption is important for TikTok SEO – a.k.a. who the TikTok algorithm will ultimately display your video to. The more related your caption is to the topic your video is about, the greater the chances for the right people to see it.

Your caption is also where your hashtags and mentions go.

So yes, captions have their part in your content getting on the FYPs of your audience and potentially making you TikTok famous.

So, don’t ignore it. And instead, use some of the ideas below to create TikTok captions that fit your video.

How do I write a TikTok caption?

Really, you can write it any way you want, but here are a few tips to create a great TikTok caption.

  1. If you want to keep it short, by all means, do. Especially if your caption is just there to add the final touch and doesn’t include any important information. Your TikTok caption limit is 4000 characters, which is actually quite a lot.
  2. If you have some information to share, the caption is a great place to do that. You can point it out to your audience in the video to make sure they read it.
  3. Don’t forget to account for the characters your hashtags will use – they’re a part of your caption character limit. The same goes for mentions, for example, when you stitch or duet a video, but also when you just want to tag someone in your description for reference.
  4. Include keywords related to the contents of the video to make it more likely for the right people to come across your content.

Bonus tip: You can also use professional TikTok management tools for business like NapoleonCat. Its Publisher tool will not only let you plan and schedule your TikToks, including your captions, but it also includes an AI assistant that can boost your TikTok captions or even write them entirely for you, based on your style and goals.

Short TikTok captions

TikTok captions can be really short. You can think of them as a headline for your TikTok video, or a word of very concise commentary that’s on point. Here are some examples of what that could look like.

  • Watch till the end!
  • This is not a drill
  • Life hack
  • Morning routine
  • Book talk, current favorite?
  • Travel hacks
  • SMH
  • Let me know
  • #IYKYK (if you know, you know)
  • Typical 🙄
  • Look what just dropped
  • I can’t even
  • This is your sign
  • Mind blown 🤯
  • I need recommendations
  • Epic
  • It’s a vibe?
  • It’s impossible 🤷
  • Much needed
  • Same

Question TikTok captions

TikTok captions are also a great way to elicit comments from your audience. Think of them as a question you actually want to ask your viewers – that’s related to the video and that they can ask in the comment section. That might actually boost the engagement on your TikTok videos.

  • Agree?
  • What do you think?
  • What’s your go-to dance move?
  • Ever tried it?
  • Why tho?
  • DIY hack you swear by?
  • Tell us your magic trick!
  • Share your routine!
  • Which one would you choose?
  • One word to describe today?
  • What’s your secret?
  • Is it just me?
  • Which is it?
  • 1, 2, or 3?
  • Who else does this?
  • Any tips?
  • How do we feel about this?
  • This or that?
  • Ever heard of it?
  • Can u imagine???

  • Don’t try this at home
  • Thank you, Captain Obvious

TikTok captions FAQs

How to turn on captions on TikTok

So, let’s clarify one thing first.

There’s TikTok captions – the kind this article talks about – which are the description of the TikTok video content you upload.

And then there’s closed captions (CC) – the subtitles that go with your videos to let people read if they can’t/don’t want to listen to the audio.

With the first type of captions, they’re there by default, and you just have to fill in the caption with your text (you’ll find plenty of ideas in this article.) You can also leave it empty, and then your video will technically have no captions.

If you’re thinking about the second type of captions – the closed captions – you should see an option to turn the auto-generated captions in your post settings, where you can turn them on and off, and also edit them.

You can also turn your captions on and off in your Privacy settings.

How to turn off captions on TikTok

Same as above – if we’re talking about your automatically generated closed captions, a.k.a. your subtitles, you can turn them off in the setting for your individual video, or in your account’s general privacy settings.

How to edit captions on TikTok

Depending on which captions you mean:

  • If you’re thinking about the description, you can edit it in the settings screen just before posting your video.
  • If you’re thinking about your auto-generated closed captions that TikTok creates based on your audio, you can edit after they’re generated. When the auto-captions display at the bottom, tap the pencil icon, select the line you want to edit, and make your changes.
  • You can also create your captions manually while you edit your video.
