Pros and cons of using AI tools for social media content creation

Using AI tools to create content has both benefits and drawbacks – as basically anything. That is not to say you shouldn’t use AI at all – it’s a helpful tool, after all, there’s no doubt about that. But it’s also good to be aware of the potential concerns and problems associated with using AI to be able to solve and mitigate them with human-powered actions. Which, luckily, is totally possible

The pros

  • Speed and efficiency. This is probably the most obvious one. AI tools can generate content very quickly, which significantly reduces the time and effort required to create social media posts. As a social media manager, this can help you keep social media posts coming consistently and maintain a posting schedule well in advance. If you do everything on your own, this is a huge help, freeing your time for more strategic tasks like planning ways to achieve your social media goals
  • Consistency and reliability. AI is great at creating content according to guidelines, helping you maintain a consistent tone of voice and style across social media posts, which is harder when you have multiple content creators working on the content. This is obviously helpful in maintaining a consistent brand image, possibly saving you more time editing the content you get from multiple contractors or team members.
  • Data-driven insights. Because AI can analyze enormous amounts of data very quickly, it can help you understand what types of content perform best on your social media channels and create more of those. This means it’s easier to increase engagement or reach, define optimal posting times, predict trends on social media – and create and schedule content according to those for the best possible performance.
  • Cost-effectiveness. Depending on what tools you use (free vs. paid), creating your social media content at scale might be much cheaper than having it created by humans. Keeping in mind the point above, the content might also bring better results, getting higher engagement.

The cons (or question marks, at least)

  • Lack of human touch. If you’ve read several posts or articles generated with ChatGPT, for example, you can probably recognize pretty easily that it’s written by AI – just by the repetitive structure and certain expressions it keeps using. AI keeps advancing, but it’s still not there yet when it comes to personality, creativity, emotion, and things like humor or cultural context.

As a result, you can end up with content you still have to edit/rewrite, which kind of misses the point of saving time. (Though it might be useful to at least help you structure your content and generate post ideas you can elaborate on.)

  • Skipping the creative process. For me, personally, that’s a big con – because writing begins with thinking and researching. And that’s when the best ideas often come up. By giving it all away to an automated tool, this part might not happen at all – which can lead to creating bland, generic content over time. So, there definitely needs to be a balance between automation and human input.
  • Ethical and privacy concerns. AI-generated content is still largely unregulated when it comes to copyright and privacy concerns, so there’s the question of who owns the content and how you can actually use it without risking it getting copied by someone else. Of course, the way AI analyzes content and learns based on bits and pieces of other people’s content is also something that might raise ethical concerns and needs to be taken into account.
  • Getting the right output from AI. Getting the content you need from AI might mean learning to ask for the right things, i.e., writing the right prompts. This is usually a time investment on its own, making the time savings a little less than we’d all like to think. AI needs to be trained first to understand your tone of voice, your audience needs, and your marketing objectives before it can give you spot-on, unique content tailored to your brand strategy.

Canva

I probably don’t have to introduce Canva to anyone working in social media. But did you know that you can use it to generate both text and images using its AI capabilities?

Canva making it even easier to design with AI

With the paid plans, you can generate images, icons, and even videos using text prompts. It’s definitely not perfect, as most AI-powered tools generating images are, but it can definitely help speed up the image design process, especially for non-designers (which is who Canva is mostly intended for).

Besides that, Canva’s Magic Studio lets you automate things like:

  • presentation design
  • video sync
  • writing and rewriting content
  • image editing using text prompts
  • resizing images for different social media platforms

It also has integrations with AI-powered design tools, such as DALL-E or Imagen.

ChatGPT

Yes, there wouldn’t be an article about AI tools for social media content creation without the good old ChatGPT.

ChatGPT waiting for the prompt to arrive

You can use it to generate basically any type of content, including for social media. The key is, though, to master your prompting so that you actually get a piece of relevant content that ticks all the boxes instead of a generic social media caption you can find on literally hundreds of other social media profiles by now.

My personal tip as a writer is to treat ChatGPT’s output as inspiration rather than a ready-made product and modify it anyway for that personal touch, which it will probably lack.

Ripl

Ripl is a handy mobile and desktop app you can use to create social media designs for different industries using ready-made, customizable social media templates and post them on your channels.

The app includes an AI-powered content generation feature that lets you automate caption creation for your social media posts. It’s a helpful solution for small business owners and one-person social media marketing armies doing all the social media work themselves, including design, copywriting, and posting to social media.

AI Wordsmith

AI Wordsmith is exactly what it sounds like – a tool to write and repurpose content in over 40 languages.

Some of its features are:

  • generating text
  • generating images and graphics
  • generating code
  • an OpenAI-powered chatbot
  • audio transcription.

Grammarly

Grammarly is a popular tool for anyone who wants to make sure their content is grammatically and stylistically impeccable.

But apart from highlighting things to improve in your writing, it can also help do the actual writing, including:

  • rewriting in a specific style and tone of voice
  • generating content ideas
  • generating actual content in different formats.

  • copy for social media posts
  • videos and reels
  • voiceover videos
  • images and carousel posts.

You can, for example, create a video from your blog post to promote on social media or create a video ad out of a text prompt.

Pictory

Pictory uses AI capabilities to let you create videos – not just for social media.

Feed it a script (or a blog post, for example), and you can get a video complete with realistic voiceover and music.

You can also use it to easily repurpose longer videos like YouTube videos or webinars into short social media clips and reels for easy expansion of your social media content library.

AdCreative

As you can probably tell from its name, AdCreative is a tool that helps you automate the ad generation process and improve campaign performance while you’re at it.

It promises to generate ads that get better conversion rates and improved CTRs. And besides social media ads and other types of ads, you can also use it to generate social media posts, product photoshoots, and campaign insights.

Best AI marketing tools

All of the above are obviously AI marketing tools as well, but here are some more examples of AI marketing tools that go beyond social media content creation.

  • Copy.ai calls itself an AI GTM platform with marketing and sales capabilities, including SEO workflows, demand generation workflows, and sales enablement features.
  • SurferSEO uses AI to help you with content generation based on suggested keywords to optimize your search engine rankings.
  • ManyChat is one of the tools that helps automate chat marketing on Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and SMS.
  • Zapier uses AI to let you connect apps and automate lots of tasks in marketing and sales with the tools you already use.
  • Kissmetrics and other analytics tools help you analyze data and customer insights into your customer behavior to adjust your marketing strategy.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive at all – because there are hundreds of AI marketing tools to choose from these days, and I’d have to write at least a dozen articles on them, if not more. (Or maybe AI could do it for me. 🤔)

So, do your own research to find the ones that fit your company’s needs best (sorry, I didn’t want this to sound like “do your own Google search,” but that’s kind of what you should do.)

And if you’re looking for social media management tools that help you create, schedule, and post content on social media, moderate engagement, and analyze the results, give NapoleonCat a try – free for 14 days.
