DM (Direct message)

A direct message (DM) is a private message sent between individual profiles on social media platforms.

Unlike public posts or comments, DMs are not visible to anyone other than the sender and recipient. The ability to send direct messages has become a popular feature across multiple social media platforms and messaging apps, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp.

Direct messages can serve a variety of purposes. They can be used to start a conversation with someone new, to communicate more privately with existing connections, or to send important information that should not be shared publicly. In addition, businesses often use DMs as a tool for customer service, allowing customers to send private messages with questions, comments, or concerns.

One of the benefits of using DMs is the ability to communicate more authentically and build stronger relationships with others. By sending a personalized message, brands and individuals can demonstrate their interest and appreciation for others, which can lead to more meaningful interactions and networking opportunities.

However, DMs can also be used for malicious purposes, such as cyberbullying, harassment, or scamming. As a result, social media platforms have implemented various privacy settings and security measures to protect users from unwanted messages and protect their personal information.

By default, DMs from non-followers are blocked or filtered into a secondary inbox. If you run a business profile and wish to use DMs to interact with customers, you can change your settings to receive DMs from any user.
